When I was sworn in as a Bend city councilor in January of 2013, I made a pact with myself and with the people Bend:
- To be a good listener & always introspective
- To be honest & courageous in my decisions
- To be an authentic leader & never, ever arrogant
These are the cornerstones of good leadership and of good governance. I feel I have lived up to this promise both personally and publically, making a concerted effort to bridge the gap between partisanship & ideology while generating consensus amongst councilors and bringing our community closer together. Only my fellow councilor colleagues and the good citizens of Bend are to judge whether I have succeeded in this endeavor over the last four years. I feel as though I have.
It is myopic and shortsighted to compare running (leading) a democracy to running a business. Parallels between the two extend as far as City Finance and Accounting, but beyond that, truly selfless sacrifice, empathy, and impartial judgement must be employed.
